Chief Scientist at Mirada Medical awarded ‘Best Physics Poster’ at ESTRO 2018 – Barcelona

We are proud to announce that Dr. Mark Gooding, Chief Scientist at Mirada Medical Ltd, has won the award for “Best Physics Poster” at ESTRO 37 in Barcelona, the annual conference of the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology.

Dr. Gooding presented on behalf of Mirada’s science team, who had adapted a well-known test of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Turing Test, to the assessment of clinical contouring in radiotherapy. Radiation Therapy professionals from a number of treatment centers were asked whether they thought a contour was human or machine-drawn, and were frequently unable to correctly identify the source, thereby verifying that the contours produced by AI were of clinically acceptable quality.

Posters were evaluated first on the scientific value of the data and then on the clarity of presentation along with its visual quality. Dr. Gooding took the top prize by presenting the evaluation of AI in autocontouring in an understandable and accessible manner, and demonstrated why Mirada’s DLCExpert™ is a breakthrough technology.

Founded in 1980, ESTRO, the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, is a non-profit and scientific organization that fosters the role of Radiation Oncology to improve patients’ care in the multimodality treatment of cancer.

With over 6,700 members in and outside Europe, ESTRO supports all the Radiation Oncology professionals in their daily practice: Radiation Oncologists, Medical Physicists, Radiobiologists and RTTs (Radiation Therapists) and the wider oncology community. ESTRO’s mission is to promote innovation, research, and dissemination of science through its congresses, special meetings, educational courses and publications.
